Grozny volcano started to erupt on 3 May 1989, producing small (probably phreatic) explosions of gas and black ash. On 8 May an ash eruption produced a plume of 1600 m height and lasted 8 minutes. Residents of Goryachie Kluchi village were put on alert. On 19 June an eruption produced a 2000 m high ash plume. An explosion in August formed new fumarolic vents on the dome's N flank ca. 70-100 m distance from the summit.
Volcanologists climbed the dome on 16 September and found sulfur-encrusted fissures and small explosion craters on the dome, but no juvenile material. 2 mud flows (4-6 m wide) extended 1.5-2 km down the dome's N side where they had destroyed areas of thick vegetation (bushes and bamboo).
