HIKE as close as safely possible, when it's possible! Lava flows are not accessible every day due to the quickly-changing eruption, but when they are, we can get you there & back for the best chance to see red, active lava close-up & safely!
If there's no lava, we hike a 10mi/16km round-trip offering the closest legal sunset view of the active Pu‘u ‘O‘o vent on an epic 8-hr tour. (Too far? Choose the National Park or Kalapana & Kapoho instead, with LAVA PRIORITY option when possible to include the lava hike within your specified limits, or see lava from a distance if it's too far.) Current status: Lava flows ARE ACCESSIBLE as of March 2013 via a 6mi/11km (~4 hr + viewing time) round-trip hike over uneven terrain.

The Lava Proximity Hike
HIKE as close as safely possible, when it's possible! At present, this hike requires 7mi / 12km / 4-5 hrs walk at sea-level over uneven terrain crossing recent & historic lava flows and islands of native vegetation, allowing ~2 hrs at the site of activity on an 8-hr tour leaving from Hilo or Volcano (or 6-hr meeting in Kalapana). This itinerary can be combined with our other tour offerings and customized to your preferences, please enquire! Arrival info:The tour starts and ends on Big Island, ideally in Hilo or Volcano. Pick-up and transfers to and from Kona can be arranged, but the guided transfer time counts towards the time of the tour. |
