Palena volcano is a group of 5 cinder cones in southern Chile NE of Melimoyu volcano. The cones are aligned along a NNE trend and are of Holocene age, i.e. younger than 11,700 years. The middle cone is called Cerro Palena and lends its name to the whole group.

Palena Volcanic Group volcano (Chile) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 18 December-24 December 2013 (New Activity / Unrest)

Based on a pilot observation and analyses of satellite images, the Buenos Aires VAAC reported that activity at the Palena Volcanic Group began around 1530 on 22 December.
