The 17-days study and trekking tour crosses Java from West to East and ends on Bali. Along the way, we visit and climb some of its most interesting and active volcanoes: Krakatoa and Papandayan in West Java, Merapi in Central Java, Kelud, Semeru, Bromo, the Tengger caldera, and Ijen in East Java.
This tour combines easy to moderate hikes with some adventurous trekking and its main goal is to see Java's volcanoes from close-up. Besides, you will get a deep impression of Java's varied landscapes, its colorful culture and cheerful people. Made for couples or small groups, this tour allows you to travel with a maximum of flexibility.
Itinerary
Day 1:
Arrival & meeting in Jakarta
Arrival in Jakarta, transfer to downtown hotel and group dinner. Acc.: : good mid-class hotel in Jakarta (D)
Day 2:
Transfer to Krakatau volcano
In the morning, a private minibus picks us up at the hotel and brings us straight to the West Coast. After a lunch and a visit to the Krakatau Volcano Observatory, we embark on a motor boat that brings us to the famous island group of Krakatau, where we will set camp on a paradise beach facing the often active Anak Krakatau volcano. In the afternoon and evening we will climb the volcano (conditions allowing) and observe its activity. Acc.: : camp on the beach of Krakatau (B, L, D)
Day 3:
2nd day on Krakatau - return to coast
Second day on Krakatau for observation / visit of Anak Krakatau. After a snorkeling break at a coral reef near Rakata Island return to West coast. Acc.: : hotel or bungalow on West Coast beach (B, L, D)
Day 4:
Transfer to Garut in West Java
Transfer day: drive through West Java to the small university town Garut in West Java Acc.: : good mid-class hotel (B, L, D)
Day 5:
Papandayan - Cipanas hot springs
A full day in the beautiful volcanic area to explore hot springs & volcanic craters (Papandayan). Acc.: : as before (Garut) (B, L, D)
Day 6:
Scenic train ride to Yogyakarta - Prambanan Temple
An early train (first class) brings us comfortably directly to the beautiful, lively city of Yogyakarta, Central Java's capital. The ride is very scenic and takes about 7-8 hrs. Acc.: : very good mid-class hotel in downtown Yogya(B, L, D)
Day 7:
Borobodur Temple - Merapi volcano and its surroundings
Visit of Borobodur Temple - Further excursions / observation of Merapi volcano depending on activity Acc.: : as before (Yogya) (B, D)
Day 8:
Free day in Yogya
Free day in Yogya, possibility to explore the city in the morning. In the afternoon transfer to Selo, a village at the northern base of Merapi with the splendid views on the mountain and its surroundings and the base for our climb the next morning.
Day 9:
Climb Merapi volcano for sunrise - Transfer to Kelud
Climb Merapi starting at around midnight to reach the top at sunrise. After descending and lunch back at the base, transfer a simple guesthouse near Kelud volcano in East Java. Acc.: : guesthouse near Kelud (B, L, D)
Day 10:
The Tengger massiv - Semeru
Scenic drive into the Tengger caldera via an impressive route to a village at the base of Semeru. Acc.: : guesthouse near Semeru volcano (B, L, D)
Day 11:
First etappe on the trek to Semeru
Accompanied by porters and well-equipped with food, cooking and camping gear, we will start a long (ca. 8-10 hrs), but in most parts easy trek across hills and forests to the beginning of the volcanic rocks and ash wilderness. Finally, we reach a basic campsite below the summit cone of Semeru at around 3000 m elevation. Lunch snacks on the way, and a fully cooked warm dinner at the campsite will keep our energy high. Day 12:
Climb to Semeru's summit
Strenous climb up the steep cone of Semeru for sunrise, descend and hike to second camp at a lake. Acc.: : camping (B, L, D)
Day 13:
Hike back to Ranu Pani and 4WD transfer to Bromo
We hike back to Ranu Pani, where we have lunch; afterwards, an adventurous jeep drive will bring us to the village of Cemoro Lawang, crossing the sand sea of the Tengger caldera. In Cemoro Lawang we will take our rooms in a comfortable family-run hotel, located right on the edge of the caldera with spectacular views on Bromo volcano. The rest of the day is free. Day 14:
Bromo volcano & Tengger caldera
Relaxed day to explore Bromo volcano and the Tengger caldera. Visit of the local volcano observatory and introduction to monitoring techniques of the volcano. Acc.: : as before (Bromo) (B, L, D)
Day 15:
Sunrise over the Tengger Kaldera - Transfer to Ijen volcano
Jeep (or hike) to sunrise viewpoint - transfer to Ijen Plateau, coffee plantations, hot bath in nearby natural hot volcanic springs. Acc.: : guesthouse at coffee plantation near Ijen (B, L, D)
Day 16:
Kawah Ijen volcano - transfer to Bali
Climb and visit of Ijen's crater, descend to the sulphur mining area and the turquoise acid crater lake. In the afternoon transfer to Bali. Acc.: : excellent beach hotel on Bali (B, L, D)
Day 17:
End of tour or extension program on Bali
The tour ends on Bali, for some with an extension on Bali with its paradise beaches, for some already with transport to the airport of Denpasar and connecting flight back to Jakarta airport. Acc.: : none (B)

Accommodation:The hotels and guesthouses during this trip are beautiful and friendly hotels of good to luxurious Indonesian standards.
