Our group from the current Krakatau to Bali photo tour just returned from a visit to Krakatau during 3-4 Sep and our expedition leader reported the following:
"
Krakatau has been highly active by tremors and VB since 2-3 Sep, the peak eruptions was on 2 Sep which was exploding non stop until 24 hours, and this eruption has destroyed part of its crater rim in the west and east part. Until today the lava still flowing on its new flank on the east and west flank and the length of the new lava flow created on 2-3 Sep is about 600 mtrs from the summit until the beach.

Then from 4-5 Sep the activity has just quite and no more continuous explosions even no glowing at the top. We can just see some glowing on the tongue of lava flow in the east and west area, and created blast steaming when meets with water. Around the area near the lava flow found many animals and fishes died due to the acidity and hot temperature, and temperature in the sea near the lava flow it's about 60 degrees.

Geo morphology of krakatau if seen from outside looks like the two peaks currently which has the tongue of Lava flow to the east and west. The crater rim being split in two parts - Different compared that the former shape. Hardened lava bombs I found every where after the forest, so was really huge explosion on 2-3 Sep I think !

According to Indonesian Volcanologist Dr. Sri Mulyaningsih after I have discussed with her ( my teacher ), that predicted the explosion is triggered from the fissure of eruption 1994 ( the older lava flow fissures ) in the eastern part which is today has become the main activity of lava flow. Or the fissure in the eastern flank was already formed during the explosion 1883.

I attach some photos from our photo expedition tour KTB 2-17 Sep.

Greetings from Carita
Andi"
