  • Eruption questionable

It appears questionable (see the fb comments below) whether Krakatau actually erupted yet, as it seems plausible that the video in Metro TV news was an older one.

  • new eruptive phase

To my knowledge, Anak Krakatau have not produced any eruption at this point (4/10/11) in regards to its current status of increased seismic activity. Indonesian media have not yet to report any visual eruptions, and my source at the village/town of Carita-Anjer said that there were no eruptions of today/afternoon. The source you have stated above does indeed show footage from Anak Krakatau, however I think it is old footage, because they mention nothing in the video-report of any eruption, rather stating that the observation post in Banten cant observe the volcano because of poor visability/clouds.
However, this is most likely the start, of a new eruption phase, as you stated. I will visit the area this weekend to observe the new developments.

  • Thanks for posting Tom. We new it would not stay quite for long.

  • sakurajima

Don't give them any ideas, Mark Burns! Krakatoa and Sakurajima can sit quietly glowing for hours to days and then abruptly go off in a big explosion without any warning.

A small group of VolcanoDiscovery visited Krakatau between 9-11 November: During this time, we observed strong ash emissions from the summit crater, a twin crater with two craters separated by a narrow ridge, one breached to the SE at the same position of the older summit crater and one facing to the NW. The 2007-2009 crater and lava dome complex to the S beneath the summit crater are mostly covered, but still morphologically visible. ...more [read all]

Anak Krakatau started a new eruption, our volcanologist guide Doni reports from Indonesia. Explosions (near the summit?) created a new crater on its eastern side.

During a recent visit to Krakatau from 12-14 July on one of our tours, ash eruptions were observed, producing plumes of several hundreds of meters. During night, however, no incandescence was seen.
