Seismic signal from Machin volcano yesterday (CIMA station, Weber County)
On April 13 at 15:54 (local time), a volcano-tectonic earthquake of magnitude 2.8 associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice occurred southwest of the main dome a depth of 7.4 km, and was felt by residents near the volcano, in the municipality of Cajamarca, in the village of Toche and the area known as Moral (Tolima).
Seismogram last evening from Cerro Machin (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)
Seismic activity remains elevated with frequent earthquake swarms. A probably shallow swarm occurred yesterday, but has now eased again. INGEOMINAS locates most volcanic-tectonic earthquakes in an area SE of the dome at depths between 3.5 - 8 km. No surface activity has been observed (yet).
Seismogram last night from Cerro Machin (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)
Current seismogram from Cerro Machin (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)
A swarm of volcano-tectonic earthquakes occurred from 16:36 h (local time) until 19:25 h last night. The quakes were localized mainly to the southeast of the dome, at depths ranging between 2 and 4.5 km. ...more
The largest earthquake was recorded at 17:40 h with a magnitude of 2.9 ML and one at 17:21 of magnitude 2.6 ML. Both were felt by residents near the volcano. Other parameters monitored by INGEOMINAS have not shown significant changes. Such swarms have occurred frequently under the volcano since instrumental monitoring of the volcano began. INGEOMINAS maintains alert level "yellow". [less]
Earthquakes continued to occur and were located mainly south of the main dome and the southeast of it in the area between Moral and Moralito at depths between 3 and 15 km. 2 significant quakes of local magnitudes 3.2 and 3.7 occurred on 14 and 16 Dec at 16:51 and 19:16 in the Moralito sector and were felt by residents near the volcano, and in the towns of Cajamarca and Ibague. Other parameters monitored have no significant changes.
On December 7, 2012 at 05:47 (local time) a magnitude 3.1 volcano-tectonic earthquake occurred at 14.6 km depth southeast of main dome. The quake was felt by residents near the volcano, and in the towns of Cajamarca and Ibague.
Elevated seismic activity continues to be recorded mainly SE of the main dome of the volcano in the sector between Moral and Moralito, at depths of 3-17 km. No other unusual signs of activity have been recorded recently.
Seismic signal on 17 Oct showing the earthquake (CIMA station)
On October 17, 2012 at 12:33 (local time), there was a volcano-tectonic earthquake with local magnitude 3.0 located to the southeast of the main dome to a depth of 13.26 km, and reported as felt by residents near the volcano, and in the municipality of Cajamarca (Tolima). ...more
This quake adds to ongoing seismic activity which is dominated by small quakes at 3-4 km depth beneath the main dome. A second cluster of earthquakes has been occurring at 12-16 km depth beneath an area SE of the dome in the sectors of Moral and Moralito. [less]
Seismic signal this morning October 9 (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)
Seismic signal with the 2 mag 4.6 and 3.9 earthquakes on 7 Oct (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)
On 7 October at 21:32 and 21:35 (local time) 2 volcano-tectonic quakes with local magnitude 4.6 and 3.9 occurred beneath Cerro Machin at 12 km depth to the southeast of the main dome. ...more
These earthquakes were felt by residents near the volcano, in the municipalities of Cajamarca and Ibague (Tolima), and in some municipalities in the departments of Risaralda, Quindio and Caldas. These two events triggered in an increase in seismic activity which continued for a day, but seems to have calmed down for now. [less]
Some weak seismic activity was located south of the main dome at depths ranging between 3 and 5 km. Additionally, there were earthquakes located to the southeast of the dome in the sector between Moral and Moralito. The earthquake of greatest magnitude during the week was a 1.0 (Local Magnitude ML) on September 29 at 10:15 (local time). No other changes were noted at the volcano.
Current seismogram from Cerro Machin (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)
During the last week Cerro Machin volcano continued to record seismic events associated with the fracturing of rock inside the volcano, located in the main dome and south of it, at depths ranging between 2.5 and 5 km. Additionally, other events were located to the southeast of the dome in the sector between Moral and Moralito.
Elevated seismic activity continues with 82 events registered over the past 7 days, out of which 45 shallow volcanic quakes up to magnitude 1.3 and frequent tremor pulses of weak energy. Visual observations reveal strong degassing generating a plume rising less than 1 km.
At the moment, seismicity Machin is calm again. INGEOMINAS summarizes the recent 2 earthquake swarms on 9 Sep between 7:30 and 8:30 (local time) and the following day 10 Sep between 07:20 and 14:00. ...more
Some of the quakes during these swarms were felt by inhabitants of villages near the volcano. The epicenters of the quakes were clustered at 2-4 km depth W and S of the summit dome, and the largest was the M3.6 event on 9 Sep. [less]
Current seismogram from Cerro Machin showing the 3.6 quake this morning (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)
At 07:32 local time 9 Sep, a 3.6 magnitude quake occurred at 3.2 km depth beneath the summit of the volcano. Seismicity had been elevated since 8 Sep and stronger than normal seismic activity has been following the quake today. This is the most energetic seismic activity at the volcano for probably more than a year.
No significant changes have been occurring. Weak seismic unrest continues at Cerro Machín with some small volcanic quakes clustered at depths between 3-6 km south and southwest under the main summit. The largest event was a magnitude 0.55 on 22 August at 08:27 local time.
Machín volcano in Tolima (Columbia) became active over the weekend as Columbian newspapers reported. Hundreds of families living in the area surrounding the volcano had to be evacuated. ...more
Seismologists in Manizales from INGE measured strongly increased seismicity at depths of between 2 and 5km below and to the east of Machín's crater. The alert level of Machín was raised to 3 (orange, out of 4). [less]
There was reported a unusual seismicity south at the Machin volcano dome during 6-8 January 2008. There have been reported also volcano-tectonic seismic signals that show that a volcanic activity may occur soon.
