Strombolian explosion from a vent at 2800m a.s.l. on the May 13 eruptive fissure (Etna volcano)

Semeru's activity is increasing and VSI has increased the alert level to 3 (out of 4), recommending to keep at least 4 km away from the summit. ...more [read all]

Our team member Marco Fulle who just visited Stromboli volcano with a small group reports strong, candle-like eruptions from the NE vent in the central crater of Stromboli volcano, that reach 300 m height. A similar eruption style had been present during much of 2006 and sometimes in 2007. [read all]

Although further decreasing, ash and lava emissions are still continuing from the new fissure vents at the E base of SE cone. [read all]
After last week's intense series of larger ash eruptions, such as on 10 May, Tunguarahua seems to be quieting down and has not registered any major explosions since May 11. [read all]

Etna - keeping us busy with eruptions at the moment - is worth an own tour in iteself. We have now developed a new exciting program to get to know this wonderful mountain in a series of moderate to challenging hikes, including a full traverse of the mountain. A first group departure is set for 2-8 November. ...more [read all]
Anak Krakatau continues to produce small ash-rich strombolian explosions. An indirect report from about one week ago about "lava reaching the sea", i.e. lava flows, need to be verified as it cannot be confirmed from other sources so far. More likely, ejected incandescent blocks are occasionally reaching the sea. [read all]
Batu Tara continues to be active and erupt small ash plumes. [read all]
Avachinsky volcano is getting active, producing ash eruptions. An ash plume was observed rising to an altitude of 4.3 km (14,000ft) a.s.l. on 10 May. ...more [read all]
Lava and ash emissions continue although at very low levels. The violent fissure eruption that started on May 13 from an originally 600 m long east-trending fissure parting from the NE base of the SE crater at around 2900 m elevation decreased surprisingly quickly in intensity. It seems to be coming to a soon end, although a weak emission of lava continues at present. ...more [read all]

Based on SIGMET reports and pilot observations, the Buenos Aires VAAC reported that ash plumes from Ubinas rose to altitudes of 5.5-7 km (18,000-23,000 ft) a.s.l. on 9 and 12 May. Plumes drifted E and SE, respectively. [read all]

Chaitén volcano continues to erupt strong ash plumes although none during the past weeks reached the intensity of the large explosion on May 2nd. Based on observations of satellite imagery, SIGMET reports, and pilot reports, the Buenos Aires VAAC reported that during 7-13 May ash plumes from Chaitén were continuously present and during 7-9 May rose to altitudes of 6.1-10.1 km (20,000-33,000 ft) a.s.l. The plumes drifted E and NE. ...more [read all]

From field observations by Rosario, the beginning of a large new eruption at Etna is confirmed. Following the intense tremor, a fissure has opened NE of the SE crater, about 800m long, and erupting from about 15 vents with spectacular bubbles and hawaiian lava fountains. The lava is very fluid and forms impressive flows into the Valle del Bove. ...more [read all]

The new eruption phase of Etna volcano shows high seismic activity and ash clouds caused the airport of Catania to be closed. Our team member Marco Fulle is reporting high seismic activity that may cause a new fisure to be opened at Etna volcano. [read all]

Our VolcanoDiscovery Team members Marco Fulle and Rossario Basile report new paroximal eruptions at the SEC area of Etna volcano and a lava flow into the Valle del Bove. Because of bad weather conditions no more details can be reported yet. [read all]

The until now rather unknown Chilenean Chaitén volcano erupted violently on 2 May. Chaiten is a small, glacier-free caldera with a lava dome located 10 km NE of the town of Chaitén on the Gulf of Corcovado. There were no known historic eruptions and its last activity might go back several thousands of years. [read all]

Anak Krakatau is getting active again. CVGHM reported increased seismicity during 14-21 April as well as ash plumes accompanied by ejections of incandescent rocks observed during field observations on 16, 17, and 18 April. The renewed eruption affected the summit and the E and S flanks. Booming noises were reported and occasionally heard at an observation post 42 km away. The Alert Level was raised to 3 (on a scale of 1-4) on 21 April. [read all]
