Chaitén volcano experienced an increase in activity over the past few weeks. Yesterday, around 11 am local time on 19 Feb., a largere section of the growing lava dome in the crater collapsed, triggering a large pyroclastic flow that came close to the already largely abandoned town of Chaitén. According to press reports, heavy ash falls occurred in the area and the evacuation of the remaining residents of the town is under way. ONEMI reports the eruption of a considerable column of ash. ...more [read all]

A new eruption started at Galeras volcano in south-western Colombia on 14 Feb. 2009. INGEOMINAS reported an ash explosion at 19h10 local time accompanied by a strong pressure wave, strong ash fall and release of large quantities of sulphur dioxide gas. The city of Pasto and nearby areas suffered from ash fall, but no fatailities or accidents have been reported caused by the eruption. ...more

The volcano Redoubt in Alaska is very close to an eruption. The Alaska Volcano Observatory reports that there are increasing seismic levels. Until now there is no eruption visible. The staff of the observatory is watching the volcano on a 24 hours base. The alert level is at orange, what is a serious sign for a near eruption. The ice covered volcano may cause lahars and later eventually even pyroclastic flows (?). The situation is surely dangerous after the experience USA made with Mt. St. Helens.

It was reported that there was high seismic activity at Kliuchevskoi during 1-9 January. There was Strombolian activity and lava effusion on the NW flank. Satellite imagery shows a large daily thermal anomaly in the crater. Also ashfall was reported in Kozyrevsk village.
It was reported that during 7-13 January lava flowed through a tube system from underneath Kilauea's Thanksgiving Eve Breakout and reached the Waikupanaha ocean entry. Surface flows were noted and incandescence was seen at pali. Explosions at the ocean entry were seen. The vent in Halema'uma'u crater continued to produce white plumes. The sulfur dioxide emission rate at the summit was 800 tonnes ...more
During 2-9 January there were no seimsic data available from Karymsky due to technical issues. Satellite imagery revealed a thermal anomaly in the crater on 7 January.
It was reported that during 8-9 January, there were explosions on Fuego that produced ash plumes. Constant avalanches of blocks descended from the volcano.
It was reported that during 5-11 January activity from Etna's summit craters was observed, but bad weather prevented direct inspection of the summit area. Degassing was seen from the NW Bocca Nuova vent, from the walls and floor of Southeast Crater, and along summit fumarolic fields. The fissure E of the summit craters continued to produce active lava flows until the end of the fissure, along the W wall of the Valle del Bove.
Satellite imagery shows, that on 7 January ash plumes from Dukono rose to an altitude of 1.8 km and drifted E and SE.
It was reported that during 29 December-9 January Chaitén's lava dome continued to grow. Plumes rose to altitudes of 2.6-3.1 km. Block-and-ash flows from frequent spine collapses fell down from the edge. ...more
Satellite imagery reported that on 7 January ash plumes from Batu Tara rose to an altitude of 2.4 km and drifted NE and ENE.
Satellite imagery reported that during 7-8 and 10-11 January ash plumes from Barren Island were seen.

It was reported that during 7-12 January there were visible steam-and-ash plumes from Tungurahua, ash fell within 8 km and roaring, explosions, and "cannon shot" noises were reported. Also incandescence blocks were ejected from the crater and rolled down the flanks.
It was reported that during 2-3 January activity from the Soufrière Hills lava dome increased drastically. On 2 January, a pyroclastic flow traveled down to Tyers Ghaut (NW) and to to the upper part of Belham River. On 3 January two explosions produced ash plumes to high altitudes and ashfall affected most of the island The strong explosions reached to at least 500 m above the dome. In-column collapses resulted in pyroclastic flows. The level of activity decreased dramatically after the second explosion.
It was reported that thermal anomalies over Shishaldin's summit were visible on in satellite images during 7-10 January.
3-14 January ash plumes from Rabaul rose to altitudes of 1,7 km. Explosions and incandescence were visible. There were no flights by Air Niugini because of ash fall until 13 January. On January 11 two vents opened at the SW flank.
