According to scientists around geologist Dr. Shan de Silva from Oregon State University, the ground beneath the volcano is inflating and the magma chamber might be filling. Along with thousands of microquakes, this could indicate a future eruption. ...moreA study published in 2008 revealed that between 1992 and 2006, geodetic satellite measurements recorded an ongoing 70 km wide deformation field with a central uplift rate of 1 to 2 cm/yr. This uplift, could be explained by an average magma influx of 1 cubic meters per second from a source at 17-30 km depth into a shallow reservoir. Sediment and stratigraphic studies suggest that the uplift might actually have started at the time, which would mean that the volcano has just started to be at unrest. [ less] [ read all]

A significant increase in seismic activity has been registered at Chile's Lascar volcano during during the first half of February, SERNAGEOMIN reports: ...moreBetween 1-15 Feb, a total of 350 seismic events or about 21 per day on average were registered, including 233 long-period signals interpreted to be caused by fluid movements, 8 so-called tornillo long-period quakes, one of which lasted 148 seconds, and 3 pulses of volcanic tremor (possibly indicating magma movements). Buenos Aires VAAC reported a pilot observing an ash plume from Callaqui at 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. on 2 January. No ash could be detected on satellite images without cloud cover and it is likely that the observation was strong fumarolic activity rather than an actual eruption. [ read all]
