High-temperature fumaraoles from the comosite cone (the "dome") at the shore of Poás' crater lake (photo: E. Fernández, 24 Feb 2012)
During February, Poás activity consisted in strong high-temperature fumarolic activity and sporadic small phreatic explosions, reported by park rangers. ...moreThe latest monthly bulletin of Costa Rica's volcano observatory OBSICORI published a more detailed summary of Poás' activity during February summarized as follows: The ultra-acid crater lake had a greenish-gray color with sporadic convection cells visible in the central part carrying sulfur in suspension. Lake temperature were measured at 44° C, which is a value significantly lower than those measured during most of 2009-2011. The pH value of the lake water was measured at 0.01, slightly "less" acidic than during November 2011 (pH -0.4). [ less] [ read all]

Seismic recording of a phreatic explosion at 00:16 local time on 19 February 2012
New phreatic explosions were recorded at Rincón de la Vieja volcano in northern Costa Rica. ...moreOn 23 February, residents in Guachipelin (11 km to the SW) woke up to hear explosion sounds between 0400 and 0430 local time. Seismic recordings showed signals typical for explosions at the same time, although other residents in other areas did not hear any eruption. Similar seismic signals were detected on 19 Feb at 00:16 and on 20 Feb at 00:46 local time, suggesting that smaller explosions occurred then as well. [ less] [ read all]

A nocturnal visit to the West Crater of Turrialba volcano on 2 February by volcanologists from OVSICORI-UNA revealed several incandescent spots: The SW vent (Boca 2010), N vent (Boca 2011) and the SE vent (Boca 2012) show differential gas and vapor outputs, while showing different incandescence levels. The latter one (opened on January 12th ) registers temperatures above 700ºC. ...more(message from Eliecer Duarte, Volcano Monitoring Team, OVSICORI-UNA) [ less] [ read all]

The Observatory Simológico Volcano of Costa Rica (OVSICORI-UNA) confirmed that a new ash eruption occurred at Turrialba volcano in the afternoon around 15h20 on 12 Jan. ...moreThe eruption was first noticed by park rangers and local residents. During the previous day, numerous rumblings could be heard from the mountain. According to OVSICORI-UNA, the eruption started between 3:10 and 3:20 pm and produced an ash plume from a vent on the southeast flank of the main crater in an area known as "La Quemada". Turrialba volcano (Costa Rica) opened a new vent on 12 January 2012 as the result of an overpressure on the southeast flank of the West Crater. ...moreThis decompression event released ash that was carried by the wind at least up to Tres Rios (27km SW from the vent). As a consequence the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias and the Turrialba Volcano National Park's administration declared a yellow alert and closed the access, which is still the case on January 17th. Fieldwork at Poás on 16 December showed new geyser activity from a vent on the N flank of the lava dome that formed in 2011. A water-and-mud fountain rose 5-6 m high, flowed into the lake, and built a terrace along the S shore. ...moreGas-and-steam plumes rose from the lava dome.
