Tour guide:

Haukur Snorrason has been involved in photography from an early age. His father Snorri Snorrason, himself a keen photographer and an Icelandair captain, took him along on his travels, taught him to handle cameras and gave him a sense of light and angle. He became fascinated with the art and his fate was sealed, so to speak, in 1982 when he sold his first photograph at the age of 14 years. Haukur trained as a photographer with Skyggna Myndverk in Reykjavík from 1989-1992 and also has a private pilot´s license.
He has previously published the highly acclaimed Land of Light (1999) and Experience Iceland (2005). He has worked in many fields of photography and is mainly involved today in commercial industrial photography. However, driven by a passionate interest in Icelandic nature and outdoor activities, Haukur has accumulated a portfolio of thousands of Icelandic landscapes which form the basis of his gallery on our website which you can visit.

Iceland in the winter 5 days

Day 1: Þingvellir - Gullfoss - Geysir - Eyjafjallajökull

Haukur will pick you up between 08:30-09:00 hours from your accommodation in Reykjavik. We will leave to tour the famous Golden Circle and spend time on photographing National Park Thingvellir, the famous geothermal area Geysir and the majestic waterfall Gullfoss. Haukur knows all the best spots and timing considering the light so you get the most out of your photos. Due to the low sun around this time we enjoy interesting light conditions similar to the light around sunrise or sundown. In the late afternoon we drive to Hellishólar Guesthouse and unwind after dinner in the warm outdoor hot pots. Hellishólar is located in Fljótshlíð which is the valley next to the volcano and glacier Eyjafjallajökull. We have stunning views from our accommodation up to the glacier cap which erupted just last winter.

Day 2: South Coast - Hrífunes

On our way to Haukur´s and Hadda Cottage in Hrífunes we will spend time photographing the unique and varied sights along the South Coast. Major sights include waterfall Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss and Dyrholaey Cliffs. We will also visit more hidden treasures that day and go for an easy hike to the top of Hjörleifshöfði cape to get some great pictures of the black sandy beach. We arrive in the afternoon to his house in the south to get a good rest. This evening after dinner we will attempt to photograph the Northern Lights* in the surroundings with Haukur. He will explain to you how it is best to frame the Aurora Borealis.
*Weather permitted – can be an option on other evenings as well.
Acc.: : Guesthouse Hrífunes (B, L, D)

Day 3: Skaftafell Nationalpark – Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & evening photography

Today will be a long day as we will be spending the evening attempting to photograph the Northern lights by the glacier lagoon. During the day we visit the must see photo sights in Skaftafell National Park. The Skaftafell National Park lies between high mountains, Lómagnúpur and the Öræfajökull glacier, an extinct volcano whose peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, is Iceland‘s highest point, 2,119 metres high. Skaftafell is a wooded area surrounded by expanses of sand desert deposited by glacial rivers. The Skeiðará river floods massively from time to time, when melt water bursts out. Skaftafell boasts varied natural beauty, with thriving vegetation, wooded slopes, and waterfalls plunging into gorges. We will visit the famous glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón during daylight and spend some time there photographing the various colours in the floating icebergs. Then we enjoy some dinner at a close by farm restaurant and warm up for the evening. After dinner we hopefully have the chance of photographing the northern lights dancing above the glacier lagoon. Late evening arrival to Hrífunes.
Acc.: : as before (B, L, D)

Day 4: Skaftafell Nationalpark – Glacier Walk and Ice cave

After breakfast you have the chance to relax, work on your photos or to have a walk around Hrífunes. We have a late start and revisit Skaftafell National Park. The main focus of today will be a Glacier Walk with an experienced guide. During the Glacier walk we have the option of photographing the rugged surroundings and then possibly to experience photographing the glacier from inside an ice cave. In the afternoon you go back to the same accommodation and enjoy your last dinner together.

Note: If the Northern light forecast is more favorable on this day then we move the evening photography between dates. We stay flexible and change the program in order to be at the glacier lagoon when they are more likely to appear.
Acc.: : as before (B, L, D)

Day 5: South Coast - Reykjavík - end of tour

Today we will head back to Reykjavík and we have the opportunity to revisit some photo locations from day 2 if weather conditions are more favorable this day.
We will photograph the black sands of the South Coast with Reynisdrangar, Vík and other interesting photo opportunities along the glacier Myrdalsjökull. Afternoon arrival in Reykjavík. You go for a short City tour before Haukur brings you back to your accommodation in Reykjavík.
