The steep, up to 300m high cliffs of Santorini's caldera show the violent geologic and volcanic history of Santorini like in a picture book. Thick, multicolored layers of various volcanic rock have accumulated during the past 500,000 years by the volcano's activity. In places, even the non-volcanic basement can be seen (Plaka, Athinios). Milos north coast has one of the geological wonders of the world to offer: the section around Sarakinikos Bay,- cliffs of ancient volcanic ash and pumice flow deposits, spectacularly polished and gullied by erosion.
Normally, a sunbathers paradise in summer, it reveals a rough beauty when the wind and waves become stronger.

The hot springs at Polichnitos (Lesbos Island) are volcanic in origin. They range in temperature between 67°C and 92°C and are among the hottest natural springs in Europe.
You can admire colorful rivers and ponds, or enjoy them in a small nearby traditional spa on location.
The waters are enriched with natural radon, sodium chloride and are comparable to the Wiesbaden springs in Germany. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Polichnitos Hot Springs, Lesbos Island (July 2011) photos (28 Images)

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos is one of the most fascinating and rare monuments of geological heritage in the world. Its creation, 20.000 000 year ago is connected with the intense volcanic activity in the Aegean during the Miocene period. In 1985, the forest was declared a Protected Natural Monument.
