The main summit of Conchagua is Cerro del Ocote, but the secondary summit Cerro de La Bandera to the ENE of the elongated volcanic edifice seems to be younger. It is uncertain whether the volcano should be considered still active, but it has certainly not erupted for a long time. There is fumarolic activity on some spots of both peaks. Background:Conchagua volcano is elongated in a WSW-ENE direction and the eastern and southern flanks descend into the sea. Eruptions reported at Volcan Conchagua for the years 1522, 1688, 1868, and 1947 are erroneous, and may refer to landslides associated with earthquakes. (GVP) |
