8 ditë Montserrat & Guadeloupe

Day 1: Arrival in Pointe à Pitre (Guadeloupe)

You will be met on arrival in Guadeloupe. After meeting of the group, depart for Basse Terre, the area of Guadeloupe dominated by Soufrière volcano. Introduction and group dinner.

Day 2: La Soufrière volcano (Guadeloupe)

La Soufrière de la Guadeloupe (Photo E.Pradal)
Climb the volcano of la Soufrière:discover the evidence of its recent volcanic history forming the lava dome and the last phreatic explosions. Relax in the hot springs of Bains Jaunes ("Yellow Baths") afterwards, a geothermal natural spa which appeared on the flank of the mountain and was built in 1887.
Acc.: : as before (Basse Terre) (B, D)

Day 3: Geologic history revealed and geothermal power

The geothermal plant at Bouillante
Observe spectacular volcanic outcrops (deposits of pyroclastic flows, debris avalanches and Plinian explosions) telling the volcanic history of Soufrière volcano and the Monts Caraïbes. Guided by Evelyne, you will learn yourself how to "read" volcanic layers. No previous field knowledge required!
Sites visited will include: avalance deposits at the mouth of the river Galion, deposits of the ancient (ca. 500,000 years old) Houëlmont volcano in the Anse Turlet, forming the backbone of the Monts Caraïbes massif, pumice deposits at Pintade, result of gigantic explosions followed by the formation of a 3 km diameter caldera, at the beginning of the growth of modern Soufrière volcano around 100,000 years ago.
Visit of the geothermal power plant of Bouillante.
Acc.: : as before (B, D)

Day 4: Volcano Observatory - Chutes du Carbet waterfall

Visit of the volcano observatory. Beautiful hike through lush tropical forest to the magnificient Chutes du Carbet waterfall. Study of andesitic lava flows visible at the waterfall.
Acc.: : as before (Basse Terre) (B, D)

Day 5: Montserrat and its volcano

Aerial view of Montserrat with the coastal sector which was devastated by pyroclastic flows. Photo: Dr Anthony FINIZOLA
Transfer (small plane flight) to the British Caribbean Island of Montserrat, site of one of the most significant and still ongoing volcanic eruptions in recent times. Introduction and orientation.
Acc.: : charming guesthouse or hotel on Montserrat (B, D)

Day 6: The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) and its volcano

Visit of the MVO, and explanation of the multifaceted work of volcanologists dealing with an ongoing, dangerous eruption. Observation of the active lava dome. Tour around the island by boat offering spectacular views onto its varied coastline, partially devastated by recent pyroclastic flows. In the evening, if conditions permit, eruption watching.
Acc.: : as before (Montserrat) (B, D)

Day 7: Plymouth Ghost Town

Transfer and passage into the abandoned old capital. Prior to 1995, Plymouth was one of the Caribbeans most lively and beautiful towns, but during recent years, it was completely destroyed by pyroclastic flows and partially buried beneath thick ash and mud deposits. The visit will accompanied by a member of the MVO, and is a unique and impressive opportunity to study the effects of explosive volcanic eruptions first hand. If eruptive activity is too strong and the visit cannot be done for safety reasons, a different excursion will be offered (e.g. eruption viewing from safe vantage points).
Acc.: : as before (Montserrat) (B, D)

Day 8: Return to Guadeloupe - end of tour

Flight back to Guadeloupe, where the tour ends with departure or your own extension program.
Acc.: : none (B)
