Background:

Petrologically Kaiserstuhl është një alcali-carbonatite vullkan që shpërtheu rreth 16-19.000.000 vjet më parë në Miocaene. Ka pasur shumë rrjedha llavën dhe flukset lavë rreth kompleksin vullkanik. Disa nga ndërhyrjet subvolcanic formojnë pjesët e sotme vullkan. Kjo stratovolcano fillimisht kishte një lartësi prej 1000 - 2000 m. Lumi Rhein sistem shkëputjet tërthore të riaktivizuara ishte një nga shkaqet pse ka pasur të aktivitetit vullkanik rreth fushën e "pyllit të zi" perëndimore / Schwarzwald.
