Photos from the winter tour to the Saronic Gulf1. Day 27 December: Arrival in Athens
After arriving at Athens airport we drove to the Hotel Magna Grecia in the center of Athens. The nice hotel is styled with wall paintings and a nice interior. We had a little walk through the lonely Plaka area. 2. Day 28 December: Athens round tour
Our tour started at the famous Acropolis. Even there we could see the results of tectonic movements. Some columns at the Propylaeon are moved by earthquakes. The Erehtion, the Parthenon temple and the museum are the highlights. Later we went to the fish & meat market in the Athina street. There we had a traditional meal and we watched the live around us. A walk through the Christmas market and the shops were the end of our Athens round tour. 3. Day 29 December: Arrival at Poros island
Two taxis brought us to the harbour of Piraeus where we got on a hydrofoil to Poros island. In about one hour we arrived at Poros and our nice hotel in the center of Poros. A nice stroll through the lanes of Poros and some shopping was the right start for Margaret, Kathyrn, Liz and Hannah. The free around running dogs were the first friends of the two teenagers... A nice meal at the Rota tavern next to the hotel gave us the energy for more sightseeing... 4. Day 30 December: Ship tour to Hydra island
The island of Hydra was our target and a fast ship brought us there. A nice walk around the coast brought us to nice bays and we even saw a woman taking a bath in the cold seawater... We discovered ancient sherds and Liz found a Mantis! The island was toally lonely and together with us nearly all guest left Hydra with the fast hydrofoil. 5. Day 31 December: The ancient town of Trizin & New Year
With a hired car we drove first to the new discovered grave of the mythical hero Theseus. This mycenean graves are sure one of the most important highlights of the region. Later we arrived at Theseus hometown Trizin, a little village between lemon orchards. The excavations of the "ancient hospital" and sanctuary of Asclepios and the ruin of the Metropolis church are also interesting for our teenagers. And many anemonies were target of many photographs. The beginning of New Year was a bit too calm, because many shops closed until 24:00. Later a tour to the bars and "discos" showed that 2007 started a bit lonely for Poros. Less people were there than last year... 6. Day 1 January 2007: Excursion to the historic volcano at Methana
This day we went to the volcano peninsula Methana where we climbed up in the center of the historic volcano (erupted about 230 B.C.). The great landscape impressed also Liz and Hannah and so it was not boring for teenagers ;-) We went up in the great thermal-fault cave and found other visitors. Later we enjoyed the fresh salads at the beautyful tavern of Theodoros and his wife Dorte (from Denmark). Sitting in the sun in this great valley is a pleasure... 7. Day 2 January: The ancient theater of Epidaurus & the Didyma dolines
The ancient theater of Epidavros is a nice place in winter time. There is not too much tourists around and so we could enjoy the great atmosphere. A walk through the excavation showed many changes since the last visit in January 2006. On our tour back to Poros we stopped at Trahia where we got fresh cheese, joghurt and other nice specialities... We did not go back the same way. So the karstic cave-dolines were a great target that impressed everybody. Inside one of the Dolines of Ddiyma we visited the chapel of St. George and another older one. A nice sunset at Thermisia and we went through many curves back to Poros. 8. Day 3 January: Methana round tour
Methana and its mountains were the first place to go. At the nice chapel of St. Athanasios we had a great view to the central volcano cladera Stavrolongos. And on a earth road we walked to the northern volcanic mountain view. There about 6-8 volcanoes can be seen. On a highplain we visited prehistoric, archaeological ruins and went back to the car. The village of Kounoupitsa was passed and at the settlement of St. Nicolaos we visited the baths of Pausanias...Later we drove back to Theodoros and Dorte and enjoyed their specialities that were grilled on charcoal...With the last daylight we visited the acropolis of ancient Methana, the Paliocastro. Nice photographs were taken... 9. Day 4 January: Last day at Poros
After a nice last lunch at the Rota tavern in Poros we shipped back to Piraeus with the last ferry boat to have time for shopping and more sightseeing in Athens. So everybody could get presents for home... 10 Day 5 January: Good bye at Athens...
It is always a good sign if it is difficult for a tour guide to say "good bye" to a group at the airport... Tobias Schorr |
