Our colleague Marc Szlegat just returned from a visit to Stromboli volcano whose activity has recently been increasing. Marc observed that there were 5 active glowing vents within the crater terrace. The most spectacular explosions took place from the eastern vent, the cone that had been building since 2009. They occurred roughly every 20 minutes, with sometime powerful explosions ejecting lava bombs up to 300 m height, many of which falling onto the Sciara del Fuoco. ... [more]

Stromboli volcano is in a phase of strong activity. Reports by visitors and images taken with the webcams show that in particular the northwestern vent in the summit crater often produces strong explosions that shower the crater terrace with incandescent lava. ... [more]

During most of August and up to today, Stromboli's activity has been at some of its highest levels observed in recent decades. Protagonist has been the NE crater, which has been continuing to produce powerful lava bubbles. Ejections of incandescent lava bombs often reached more than 500 m height, and hit both the Pizzo and Bastimento areas, the most popular viewing points (which for this reason remained closed for excursions most of the time). ... Stromboli volcano continues to be at an elevated level of activity, with frequent long-lasting spattering episodes from the NE crater, and occasional lava flows on the crater terrace. This indicates that the magma level inside its conduits is still unusually high. [more]
