A single historical, probably phreatic eruption from Tinguiririca was recorded in 1917. There was an un-confirmed report of an eruption in 1994. Background:The Tinguiririca complex was constructed during 3 eruptive cycles dating back to the middle Pleistocene.Constant fumarolic activity occurs within and on the NW wall of the summit crater of Tinguiririca, and hot springs and fumaroles with sulfur deposits are found on the western flanks of the summit cones. 15 Jan 1994 uncertain eruption
There was a single report of large explosive eruption column rising above Tinguiririca on 15 Jan 1994. However, it is believed that the observation, from more than 60 km distance, was inaccurate and not a volcanic plume, but perhaps a thunderstorm cloud, since there are no other indications that an eruption actually took place. ...more |
