There has not been much change in volcano activity worldwide, and as we're on tour, our reports will be less frequent until next week. A new earthquake swarm has started yesterday at El Hierro volcano. It is located at about 10 km depth, i.e. only half the depth of previous swarms, and just north off the western El Golfo coast. So far, more than 50 (mostly very small around magnitude 1) quakes have been registered since yesterday. A small increase in tremor is visible as well. Activity remains weak at Popocatépetl in Mexico. The frequency of explosions has again decreased (once every 2-3 hours), but a series of small volcano tectonic earthquakes and phases of high-frequency tremor has been recorded since the evening of 14 Aug under the volcano. Fuego volcano has occasional strombolian explosions ejecting incandescent blocks to about 100 m and producing ash plumes of 100-400 m height. The lava flow is reported to be 250 m long in the latest update from the volcano observatory. Santiaguito / Santa Maria (Guatemala) has had a small decrease in activity, with less frequent explosions and the lava flows also appearing to be less active. Strong unrest at Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) continues, with ongoing tremor, shallow quakes, and strong steam emissions sometimes containing ash. Tungurahua volcano at the moment is the most active volcano on the continent. It continues to produce loud explosions and moderately strong ash venting which cause ashfall on surrounding communities. Tremor is high and seems to be rising. Ash is rising to an elevation of 20,000 ft (6 km) and a SO2 plume is visible drifting west from the volcano. Galeras volcano has pulses of volcanic tremor and small earthquakes. In new Zealand, volcanic activity is subsiding again. Activity has further decreased at White Island. Volcanic and seismic activity at White Island have remained low and onl a minor steam plume is visible with no apparent ash.
