Volcanic activity world-wide 23 September 2012: Bezymianny, Tangkubanperahu, El Hierro, Popocatepetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Sakura-jima, Manam, Tongariro, White IslandSunday Sep 23, 2012 19:44 PM | BY: T
Not much has happened in the volcano world this Sunday: A 50,000 ft altitude plume from Bezymianny volcano, Kamchatka, was reported in a VAAC message earlier today, but no other confirmation of a possible major eruption from the volcano could be found. Most likely, it is a false eruption report. The seismic unrest that had started in mid August at Tangkubanperahu volcano near Bandung in West Java ceased and PVMBG placed the volcano back from Waspada (watch, yellow) to normal alert level (green). SO2 and H2S emissions remain elevated, though. The number of earthquakes under El Hierro remains elevated but seems to be decreasing with 11 events yesterday and 8 so far today. Activity has decreased at Fuego volcano in Guatemala. During the past 24 hours, there were only 5 weak and one moderate explosions with small ash plumes up to 300-600 m height and ejections of incandescent bombs to 75 m above the crater. Also Santiaguito remains at relatively low activity: There are small explosions with ash columns rising to between 300 and 400 meters above the crater, degassing steam plumes of 100-150 m height, and small avalanches on the southern slope of the dome. Popocatépetl volcano has been very quiet as well: Over the past 24 h, only 5 weak explosions were detected, but there is still a strong SO2 plume emitted as sign that there is still plenty of fresh magma arriving at the volcano. A weak SO2 plume was visible from Manam volcano (PNG) suggesting that activity at the volcano continues. Sakurajima volcano has only had a smaller explosion over the past 24 hours. Finally, in New Zealand, Tongariro volcano has remained calm as well and not produced further eruptions. GeoNet reported a few days ago that no further volcanic activity has occurred from the reactivated Upper Te Maari craters. Reports of ash emissions on Friday were false. Similarly, there have been no more eruptions at White Island. Previous newsSunday, Sep 23, 2012

During a visit to the summit crater of Etna volcano this afternoon, we could hear deep-seated explosion sounds at intervals of few minutes from the Voragine pit crater, suggesting that some activity is going on deep (several 100 m) within its conduit. Sporadic explosive activity from adjacent Bocca Buova ceased about a week ago according to the Etna mountain guides. ...

Fuego volcano, Guatemala has increased its activity again. Strong strombolian explosions generated ash plumes rising up to 1 km and ejected blocks up to 200 m above the rim. Incandescent material rolled down the flanks for 500-1000 m and shock waves accompanied the explosions. ...
