Volcanic activity world-wide 30 September 2012: El Hierro, Fuego, Popocatépetl, Santiaguito, Bagana, Karangetang, SakurajimaSunday Sep 30, 2012 16:47 PM | BY: T
Volcanically spoken, this has been a very calm Sunday so far with little changes to report. El Hierro has been calming down over the past 2 days or so. There are still some quakes, but their number and magnitudes have been decreasing. It will be interesting to see whether new swarms occur in the near future. Popocatépetl had 6 weak explosions during the 24 hour interval 28-29 Sep, and a steam plume is rising about 1.5 km above the crater. Fuego volcano remains quite active with 16 explosions during 28-29 Sep, ash plumes of up to 900 m height and incandescent material reaching 200 m above the crater. Shock waves are felt in up to 15 km distance during the strongest bursts. Fine ash fall occurs in nearby areas. Santiaguito has occasional ash explosions, such as one captured on the webcam yesterday morning. The block lava flows from the sides of the dome are either stagnating or only very weakly active judging from the latest INSIVUMEH reports. An strong SO2 plume is visible at Bagana volcano (Bougainville Island, PNG) today, suggesting increased activity at the volcano. A thermal anomaly at the summit of Karangetang volcano is visible on MODIS satellite images and a steam plume can be seen rising from the volcano. Otherwise, there are no current reports of eruptive activity. Sakurajima volcano calmed down after having a record-number of explosions on 28 Sep, and only had a small and an intermediate explosion during the past days.
