Volcanic activity world-wide 2 October 2012: El Hierro, Popocatépetl, San Miguel, Fuego, Santiaguito, Pacaya, Reventador, Little Sitkin, Batu Tara, Sakurajima

October starts as a volcanically calm month. A few updates for today summarized (as usual, the links point to more detailed reports):

A new earthquake swarm could be in the making at El Hierro: Yesterday, the number of recorded quakes rose to about 15. The earthquakes, mostly small with magnitudes up to 1.9, are concentrated again in 2 areas: in the center of the island at depths of 10-15 km and in the western El Golfo area at depths of about 10 km.
No tremor signal is currently visible on IGN's recordings.

Popocatépetl's activity remains moderate with 9 weak explosions, visible glow at night and strong SO2 emissions. Weak volcanic quakes and tremor pulses were recorded as well. CENAPRED's alert status "Yellow Phase 2" remains unchanged.

Seismic activity at El Salvador's San Miguel volcano has increased. Many quakes and strong tremor pulses can be seen on current seismograms, but there are no reports of other unusual activity.

Fuego volcano and Santiaguito seem not to have changed much their typical activity, judging from live seismic data and will be updated later today (when the latest observatory report is published).

Pacaya volcano remains steaming at the surface and shaking a little bit in its underground.

Reventador volcano, Ecuador: A steam emission of 1 km height was observed yesterday during a rare window of clear weather.

Seismic activity at Little Sitkin volcano remains elevated, but no unusual other activity was detected.

Sakurajima volcano has been busy during the past 24 hours, with 4 explosions to a maximum of 11,000 ft ash cloud altitude.

Our other VAAC favorite and near permanent guest on the list, Batu Tara has remained quieter. For 3 days, Darwin VAAC has not reported new ash clouds.
