Volcanic activity world-wide 6 October 2012: Etna, Kilauea, Fuego, Santiaguito, Karymski, Batu Tara, Bagana, Nyiragongo

Saturday Oct 06, 2012 16:29 PM | BY: T

New explosions occurred at Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi which erupted 3 times yesterday evening, producing ash plumes rising 1.5 km above the crater and ejecting glowing bombs to 350 m height.

A new lava flow has began to effuse from the new scoria cone in the Bocca Nuova crater of Etna volcano on 5 October. A steady gas plume is also rising above the crater.

At Kilauea volcano on Hawai'i, inflation continues and the lava flows are pooling in the coastal flat at the base of the pali.

Fuego volcano remains similar levels of activity with 17 explosions since yesterday, although none seems to have been as strong than the larger ones (ash up to 1.2 km) the day before.

Santiaguito produced a weak pyroclastic flow earlier this morning at 06:01 hours from the SE-S flank of the dome. Ash from the event rose to 100 meters above the crater and caused minor ash fall on areas of Finca el Faro and San Jose.

Batu Tara is back on the scene. An ash plume at 8,000 ft (2.4 km) altitude has been detected by Darwin VAAC.

A possibly relatively large explosion was reported from Karymski volcano in Kamchatka this morning, but the height of the ash cloud if present at all could not be observed and was estimated to be up to 22,000 ft (7 km) based on seismic recordings.

In absence of volcanic ash plumes over northern Europe, London VAAC sends out almost daily exercise notifications about ash from ... Hekla. "Wishful" thinking?

An unusually strong SO2 plume was seen today from Nyiragongo and/or neighboring Nymuragira. Unfortunately, the area around both volcanoes is still plagued by civil war like conditions and currently off limits for safe visits.

Activity continues at Bagana volcano on Bougainville Island (PNG) as elevated SO2 emissions visible today suggest.
