The past week was characterized by an important increase of Popocatéptl volcano's activity in Mexico and one of the Etna's most spectacular recent episodes of fire fountaining. The new Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report was published today and is summarized as follows: -- new activity --- Cleveland (Aleutians): 2 small explosions detected on 13 April Popocatépetl (Mexico): increased activity since 13 April, large explosions during 13-16 April Rincon de la Vieja (Costa Rica): small phreatic eruption within and around the hot acidic lake of Rincon de la Vieja at 1400 on 14 April --- ongoing activity --- Etna (Sicily, Italy): New SEC paroxysm nr 24 on 12 April Karmysky (Kamchatka): possible small ash eruptions, thermal anomaly at summit crater Kilauea (Hawai'i): active lava lake in Halema'uma'u crater, active lava flows advancing on coastal plain Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): increased seismic activity, shallow earthquakes, strong degassing, eruption warning Pagan (Mariana Islands): steaming, no further ash emissions detected Puyehue-Cordón Caulle (Chile): almost daily small plumes rising up to 1 km, incandescence at crater observed from 10-11 April Sakurajima (Japan): ongoing occasional vulcanian eruptions Shiveluch (Kamchatka): continuing strong ash explosions up to 7-8 km altitude, viscous lava flow in 2010 crater Tungurahua (Ecuador): intermittent explosions, ash venting, ash fall ---

Another volcanically relatively quiet week has passed. Some exceptions were April's Fool's day eruption at Etna, and ongoing strong eruptions at Shiveluch in Kamchatka (where activity needs to be colossal to make the news.) ...

No major eruptions have occurred during the past week. Iceland, Santorini and Etna remain quiet. In Indonesia, Krakatau and Semeru are very active, Ijen remains at high alert. Soufrière Hills on Montserrat seems to be waking up, while Puyehue in Chile's eruption is fading. ...
