Single room:
(*) Single room supplement The supplement for single-room occupancy is 350 EUR. If you don't want to pay for the single room, we can try to find another participant of the same gender to share a room for you. Should we not find a room partner, you will get a single room, but the supplement is split in half, i.e. you only pay half of the supplement.

Equipment:
Good waterproof clothing, walking boots, sun and wind protection, a day-backpack, light dressing, one set of warm cloths, ski poles for hiking (optional), binoculars (optional).

Visum:
Different regulations according to nationality; in most cases, a double-entry visum for Rwanda is required in advance, while the visum for DR Kongo can be obtained at the land border.

Vaccinations:
Valid Yellow Fever vaccination required; malaria protection recommended.

Physical requirements:

The climb up to and down from Nyiragongo is strenuous and takes about 5-6 hours (1500m total altitude gain) in often hot conditions, but the path is relatively easy and not excessively steep. Tracking the mountain gorillas may involve 3-7 hours easy trekking through rain forest.

Nyiragongo Lava Lake

- 10-days volcano expedition to Nyiragongo volcano & mountain gorillas in the Virunga Park -

In the heart of this adventurous trip is a camp for two or three nights on the rim of the giant crater of Nyiragongo volcano, above its violently active lava lake and trek through dense forest to observe some of the last mountain gorillas in the Virunga Volcanoes Park. Visit Goma - the city and life arises from the ashes of the volcanic destruction in 2002. Legendarily beautiful landscapes of the land of 1000 hills, friendly people, comfortable accommodation, exotic cuisine make this trip complete.

Day 1Arrival in Kigali (Ruanda) - 15 January 2008

Day 2Kigali-Goma
Transfer in private 4WD minibus through the beautiful landscape of Ruanda to the Congolese border, crossing to Goma. Hotel night at the lakeshore. (B, L, D)
Day 3Climb Nyiaragongo volcano
Hike to the crater of Nyiragongo (5-6 hours) along an impressive trail through rainforest, the lava flows of 2002 and volcanic desert. Camp at the crater rim, observation of the lava lake. Night in tents. (B, L, D)
Day 4Full day on the crater of Nyiragongo
(night in tents as before) (B, L, D)
Day 5Descend back to Goma or another full day on the crater
Under normal circumstances, descend back to Goma, hotel on the lake, visit of Goma and/or the Goma Volcano Observatory. Alternatively, another full day&night on the crater. (B, L, D)
Day 6Descend from Nyiragongo or relaxing day at Lake Kivu - transfer to Park National des Volcans

Spare dayif we descend back on day 5, time for a relaxed scenic boat tour on Lake Kivu. Later transfer to the starting point for the gorilla trekking next day. Hotel or comfortable guesthouse. (B, L, D)

Day 7Park National des Volcans - Mountain gorillas
Trek through rain-forest to track and observe mountain gorillas (optional activity, gorilla ticket required in addition). Night in guesthouse/hotel as before. (B, L, D)
Day 8Back to Kigali, departure (or own extension) - 22 January 2008
Transfer back to Kigali and the airport, departure in afternoon / evening. (B, L, D)
Day 9Arrival at home or own extension
