The Island of Venus - Milos - walking & study tour on the volcanic island of Milos, Greece - 8-days itinerary (summer)8-days itinerary (summer)Day 1: Arrival to Athens
Arrival at Athens' new airport. Transfer to a comfortable hotel in downtown Athens, located near the Acropolis and in the lively, charming old city. Depending on arrival tie, you probably have some time to relax or to visit parts of the center of Athens (Acropolis, Plaka, other archeologic areas etc.). In the evening we meet for a stroll through the old city and welcome dinner in a typical nice little tavern.
Acc.: hotel*** in downtown Athens (D: dinner)
Day 2: Transfer to Milos
Depending on the flight and ferry schedules, we fly to Milos on a local carrier (in case there are no flights we take a ferry). Depending on the departure time, there could be time for optional visits in Athens in the morning and/or a short orientation walk around the port town of Milos in the afternoon. In Milos, we stay in a simple, but comfortable hotel in the lovely port town Adamas. Group dinner in a tavern in the port.
Acc.: simple mid-class hotel in Adamas (days 2-8) (B, D)
Day 3: Hike to old town of Milos, Ancient Greek ruins and a fishing village on the coast
Plaka / Tripiti is the main town of Milos. We visit the archaeological museum with important founds from excavated Ancient Greek and Prehisotric settlements of Milos. Afterwards, we walk to the archaeological excavations and to the place where the Venus statue was found. The little Ancient theater offers great views to the Gulf of Milos and its not far from the early-Christian catacombs.
At around noon, we walk down to the Ancient port of Milos and the picturesque fishing village Klima. Lunch break in a restaurant on the sea side. In the afternoon we walk back to Adamas on a scenic route. On the way we may discover spectacular volcanic rocks containing black volcanic glas (obsidian). Acc.: as before (Milos)
Day 4: Mining museum, sulphur and manganese mines
Today will be an excursion though different, relatively difficult to access parts of the island. Therefore use 4x4 vehicles (drivers provided). First we'll get a good overview on the geology and mining history of Milos in the Mining Museum of Milos. Afterwards we drive to the (destroyed) hydrothermal power station - Tobias will tell you the various causes why the people of Milos actually blew it up...!
The adventurous part starts when we head on to an old, abandoned sulfur mine, located in a spectacularly beautiful bay on the rugged SE coast. Old tools, caverns where sulfur was produced are still visible and the atmosphere is eery. At the same spot there is an incredible beach where we could take a bath. After lunchbreak in a local tavern we explore the northwestern corner of the island, the most isolated area of Milos, where we visit an abandoned iron and manganese mine. The intensely red and black colored landscape resembles "Wild West" and is geologically highly interesting. There are great opportunities to collect baryte- and other crystals... We're back to the hotel in the late afternoon. Free evening & dinner. Acc.: as before (B, L)
Day 5: Spectacular boat trip around Milos and to Kimolos Island
Today is a very relaxed day to fully enjoy Milos' legendary beauty: on a private boat, we sail around Milos' bizarre and phantastic coastlines,- likely to become an unforgettable excursion! Be sure to have plenty of film with you, since you will be using it ALL! Swimming breaks in particularly beautiful spots are included.
In detail: we start at the cape Vani and follow the coastline anticlockwise until the famous "Kleftiko" cliffs, made of imposing white pumice layers. In former times, fishermen and pirates were used the bizarre coast to hiding their boats in that area. The boat will bring us also to the neighbour island Kimolos where we can walk a short way to the village of Kimolos. (If it is too hot, we might just swim in the sea). In the afternoon, the boat will pass the impressive volcanic island of Glaronisia where huge basalt columns are exposed. Before returning to Adamas in the early evening, we pass the famous white pumice cliffs of Papafranga and/or Sarakiniko. Acc.: as before (B, L)
Day 6: Fumaroles and a beautiful bay
Milos can still be considered an active volcanic area - there are many signs of a active volcanism to be found on the island, e.g. hot gases and steam escaping from the ground or hot water boiling in the sea. Today, we visit some of these areas, starting a walk in the little village of Zephyria across fields and farmland until we reach the crater rim of the Tsingrado volcano with interesting cross-sections of pumice layers. Our hike continues to a little lava dome above the bay of Agia Kyriaki, where a whole area consists of fumaroles and hydrothermally altered rocks. There is a natural sauna (a tunnel with hot steam coming out from the walls)! We hike down to the bay of Agia Kyriaki where we find Roman ruins destroyed by tsunamis. If the weather is fine, the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear sea is great. Transfer back to the hotel in the late afternoon.
Acc.: as before (B, D)
Day 7: Free day - optional excursionToday is free for those who want to go to one of the many beaches, buy suvenirs. Alternatively, we offer an excursion in agreement with the group. We meet in the evening for a group dinner in a harbour tavern. Acc.: as before (B, D) Day 7: return to AthensToday our tour ends. You could fly back to Athens airport, stay a bit longer on Milos or go to another island ... depending on time, there are many options. Acc: none (B) |
