At about 1645 B.C. the volcano of Santorini island erupted in one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in the history of mankind, leaving a deep impact on one of Europe's oldest developed civilizations - the Minoan culture from Crete. In mythology, Santorini is often connected with the sunken island of "Atlantis". Later in 230 B.C., the eruption of the Methana volcano near Athens, as well as other eruptions of Santorini in Ancient times were described by well-known ancient writers like Ovid, Pausanias, Strabon and Pliny. Greece has always been familiar with active volcanism and is an ideal place for studying volcanoes. Recent eruptions of Santorini island in 1707, 1866, and others 1950 attracted many geologists, peots and other visitors. Until today, Greece has lost nothing of its ancient charme.
