Merapi Volcano Special

- 7-days volcano tour to watch Merapi's eruption in 2006 -

Merapi volcano in eruption (May 2006)
On this tour, we have 6 full days and nights to spend around Merapi volcano, which is in spectacular eruption at the moment. We will have a car at our disposal and try to visit the mountain from safe observation points for as much time as possible, often choosing the evenings and mornings for our observations. The itinerary will be dictated by the conditions at the time of the visit. If the volcano leaves spare time, other places of interest in and around Yogya can be included in this tour as well.
The tour is aimed for avid volcano lovers who have a strong interest in observing the ongoing eruption and who are willing to accept a certain inherent uncertainty (weather and eruption conditions), as well are prepared to accept possible risks that might be involved.
Highlights:
Extensive observation opportunities
Expert volcanologist guide
Special note about the Yogya earthquake:
We feel deeply sorry for deaths and destruction of the Yogyakarta earthquake on May 27, which Tom witnessed from first hand.
Not all of Yogyakarta has been destroyed, in fact only a small fraction of the town was affected and life has already started to continue. Visiting the area is no problem after the initial shock and mourning for the victims is over. What people need most now, is strength, hope and support to continue with their lifes and rebuild a sustainable base for living. Visiting the area as tourist is one effective way to support them. It brings work and money directly to those who need it most, and it gives hope. In addition to that, we decided to include a 100 EUR donation in the tour price; the money will be given in cash to some of the vicitims (such as co-workers for VolcanoDiscovery: drivers and guides who lost their homes).

Program

Day 1
Arrival to Indonesia
Pick-up from Jakarta (or Denpasar) airport, transfer to downtown hotel and group dinner. Night in good mid-class hotel in Jakarta.
Note: If all of the group arrives early enough, we might be able to fly to Yogyakarta already that day.
Day 2
Domestic flight to Yogya, transfer to hotel.
Days 2-7
Observation of Merapi volcano at night/ day from different viewpoints.
Accommodation: Good mid-class hotel in downtown of Yogyakarta.
Day 8
Return to Jakarta / Denpasar by domestic flight from Yogya.
Extension or international flight back.

Notes:
It seems likely that Merapi will continue its eruption for a while, but we cannot guarantee that, of course. In the unlikely event that the eruption ends before the arrival, we will find an interesting alternative program (e.g. visiting Semeru or other volcanoes).

The exact tour date will be decided shortly in agreement with the interested participants.
