Strong activity at Stromboli volcano (June-July 2006)
Stromboli's activity was extraordinarily high during much of 2006, as we could find during our repeated visits on our tours. There were about 10 active vents, most of which ejected material, sometimes to up to 3-400 m height. On one occasion, one of the vents (a steep cone in the NE corner of the central crater; it collapsed shortly after) was blowing countless beautiful gas rings ("smoke rings"). Tom presents you a sample of his photos, all taken at the end of June and beginning of July 2006.
