Italy is truely the birth place of volcanology: famous Vesuivus erupted in 79 AD, burying a Roman town that needs no further introduction: Pompeii. Etna, the second most active volcano in our time, now being in a phase of near-constant activity, hitting the news with its spectacular eruptions over and over again. Vulcano, the tiny beautiful island that the Romans believed was home to the God of Fire, Vulcano. Stromboli, "the Lighthouse of the Thyrrhenian Sea", called so because of its very regular eruptions that have been going on as far as one can remember. Who could deny the fascination that these volcanoes inspire? Italy's volcanoes are as varied as the people dealing with then and the histories connected to them.
