Volcano tours:

Watching lava flowing into the sea (Big Island, Hawai'i)
To witness a volcanic eruption is probably one of the most awe-inspiring displays of nature. On some of our tours, we try to see lava and ash from safe, but close locations. On Hawai'i, you can often even play with red lava!
This is a list of some tours from our program, where chances are good to see volcanic activity from close:

Destination Tour Volcanoes
(likelyhood of eruption viewing)(*)

Level of effort(**)
Italy Volcanoes of Italy Stromboli(90%), Etna(30%) easy-moderate

(*) Likelyhood of eruption viewing:
Volcanoes and weather are unpredictable. So, it is impossible to forecast with 100% certainty that we will actually see an eruption when visiting a particular volcano. In addition, all volcanoes have different eruption patters: While some, such as Stromboli or Kilauea are in near-continuous eruption, where chances to see activity are very high, others erupt only from time to time or are active in certain periods only. Based on experience, we try here to estimate the likelyhood to see an eruption of a given volcano for a given tour. For some volcanoes, e.g. Etna, we do arrange tours on short notice in particular when there is a viewable eruption.
(**) Difficulty:
The difficulty to access a volcano or an eruption site can vary a lot depending on circumstances. We give only a rough indication here, where easy involves only short hikes of 1-2 hours, while challenging means long hikes (6 hours and more) and often more than 1000m ascends/decends are necessary. More details are found in the description of each tour.
