During January 2013, Stromboli produced frequent small and a few larger short-lived lava flows from the breached NE crater which reached about half way down the Sciara del Fuoco. The following photos show the activity between 7-15 Jan. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Photos were taken during 30 Dec 2012 and 2 Jan 2013 from the 400m view point, Pizzo, and Bastimento. The northeastern vent produced very powerful and bright explosions of liquid lava, with ejections into all directions reaching several hundred meters in height and throwing incandescent lava bombs over the upper crater slope. Stromboli volcano: strong activity Dec 2012 - Jan 2013 (Part 1) (24 Images)
The photos were taken during 25-28 Nov 2012 when we visited the remote Komba island consisting of Batu Tara volcano during our recent volcano expedition to Indonesia. The volcano has been in continuous strombolian eruption, at fluctuating levels, since 2006. Very favorable weather and sea conditions allowed us to land several times on the narrow beach a few 100 m south of the eastern collapse scar of the volcano, the only place on shore from where the vent and its eruptions are visible. During our stay, activity varied from day to day, and consisted in frequent ash venting, mild to powerful strombolian eruptions accompanied by loud detonations and ejecting bombs to several hundred meters height above the vent, located at about 500 m elevation inside the deep collapse scar. The pictures show the new active lava dome of Paluweh volcano, which formed since late Oct 2012 next to the 1982 Rokatenda lava dome. The photos were taken during 30 Nov evening and 2 Dec 2012 morning when we visited the volcano from close range during our recent volcano expedition to Indonesia in Nov-Dec 2012. Our expedition leader Andi visited Ijen crater during a period of elevated activity in May 2012, when lots of sulfur from the fumaroles was burning at night with blue and reddish flames, creating abstract photos. The other photos are by our friends Jorge and Jessy who visited the volcano about 2 months later and give an impression of the volcano, known for its turquoise acid crater lake and the extensive sulfur mining.
