On 8 May a 3-hour long eruption took place at Sirung volcano. The eruption was accompanied by loud sounds and incandescent tephra observed rising 10 m above the crater. The explosion created an ash plume that reached 3.5 km altitude and drifted to the north, producing ashfall up to 4 mm thick near the crater.
During 9-12 May white plumes rose 30-50 m above the crater. A sulfur odor was reported in areas up to 3 km away on 12 May. That same day CVGHM raised the Alert Level to 3 (on a scale of 1-4) and recommended that visitors not approach the volcano within a 2.5 km radius. [less]

According to the study, Merapi has entered a new cycle of inflation which is a typical precursor of a new lava dome-building eruption caused by rising magma within the conduit of the volcano. At the moment, there is no way to predict when exactly the next eruption will start, but given that it is one of the world's most active volcanoes, it might not be in a too long future. [less]

Our expedition leader Andi visited the volcano and the observatory and confirms that seismic activity and degassing from the lake have decreased during the past 2-3 weeks. However, PVMBG ( the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia) still keeps the status at level 3 ("eruption warning") and the crater is off-limits to tourists. [less]

"The crater was illuminated by lava (dome) in the night, the location of the light is the southern part of the crater. [less]

At night, the glow from the dome is clearly visible from Rakata and Sertung islands, and a continuous intense solfatara plume is rising about 500 m above the summit. Andi and our group observed also that there are now more and larger fumarole fields on the southern part of the cone. According to our observations and the opinion of local scientists, this area is inflated due to the pushing of the lava dome.
The seismic recordings from the observatory of Krakatau also show an increase in activity. On 26 March, there were 138 volcanic-tectonic (A-type) earthquakes and 300 long-period (B-type) quakes alone. [less]

Batu Tara is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia and is characterized, similar to Stromboli volcano, by semi-permanent explosive summit activity. [less]

Measurements of the park showed dangerously high levels of SO2 at the crater. Volcanic tremor and earthquakes are at fluctuating elevated numbers and intensity.

CVGHM raised the Alert Level to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 9 March. Residents and tourists were prohibited from going within a 1-km-radius of the active crater.
Lamongan is a small, relatively unknown stratovolcano east of the large Tengger massif (which contains the famous Bromo volcano). It was very active in the 19th century when it produced several lava flows, but has remained more or less silent during the past 110 years. [less]

A new 10 m wide gas vent, which erupted buring gasses, was observed on 10 March at 17 m distance from the shore. Thick steaming, larger than usual, forming a thick white column of sulfur steam 200 m high was already noted since 3 March. Measurements of the lake water temperature at 5 m depth had also shown increased values of 42.70 deg C.
On 10 March, the lake surface was 2 meters higher than normal, although this could be attributed to heavy recent rain fall. [less]

Bukittinggi's Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) officer Suparmo is quoted that "the activity on Sunday was Marapi's strongest in recent days, although he noted that the alert level has remained at level II as the volcano's activity is showing a downward trend". [less]

No evacuations were taken, but people were advised to stay at least 2.5 distance from the crater. [less]

Seismic unrest near the volcano has started last summer and could be an indicator of possible new activity in the foreseeable future. [less]

A volcanologist from the Selo observation post on the north side of the volcano is quoted "there is movement in the magma chamber in the form of a new lava dome formation. But we do not know the emission point because from Selo it is not visible". It is planned to check the situation at the summit in the near future. "The status of Merapi still active normal."

Discoloration of the crater lake had started to be noticed in September 2011, but the changes have increased recently. According to the local volcanologists monitoring the volcano, the whole lake is now of muddy khaki color. In addition to the color change which could be caused by an increase of lake fumarole activity, an steep sudden increase by 13°C of the lake water temperature was detected, based on measurements taken on and before 5 February when it was at normal 27°C, and on 8 Feb, when it was 40°C warm. The eruption followed an increase in earthquakes since the previous day recorded by the local observatory that monitors Mount Lokon and Mahawu volcanoes flanking the town of Tomohon, near Manado.
Residents from nearby villages such as Kinilow I, Kinilow, and Kakaskasen were reported to have fled their homes. [less]

The decision was based on measurements of decreasing seismic, visual and temperature parameters that are regularly monitored at the volcano:
1) Decreasing steaming and bubbling from the lake was visually observed during the past weeks. [less]

Only small to moderate eruptions had been occurring over most of the past year. Between 29 December and 15 January, 8 explosions were counted which produced ash clouds up to 600 m high. One explosion threw incandescent bombs to a distance of 300 m from the Jonggring Seloko crater. During 15-29 January, only weak explosions were recorded and a small steam and ash plume rising 25-50 m was observed.
Between 30 and 31 January, 5 explosions were recorded. They produced incandescent fallout in up to 400 m distance. On 2 February at 07:47 local time, a stronger explosion produced incandescent bombs that reached 750 m distance and caused a small avalanche of blocks rolling down a distance of up to 2.5 km (note: no pyroclastic flows). The heightened activity triggered the raise in alert level the following day. [less]

"Rumbling sounds are heard around the mountain" and a strong smell of sulfur is noticed. Now in the rainy season, the main risk will likely be lahars.
Jakarta Post reports that about 500 people residing near Mount Lewotolo have evacuated their homes voluntarily, and that providing shelters for them is difficult. [less]
