Explosive activity at Anak Krakatau has resumed over the past weeks. Strong vulcanian-type eruptions from the growing lava dome in the new crater occur at intervals of 90-360 minutes as Yohannes one of our correspondants reports from a recent visit. Blocks are being thrown over the whole of the southern part of the island, including the forest and often reach the water as well. Small pyroclastic flows sometimes develop on the slope of the summit cone. The island must be regarded as an extremely dangerous place to be at the moment. Whoever visits the island should be aware of the risk of a sudden violent explosion, especially because there is little warning before an explosion and there are long intervals of quiet in between. A powerful vulcanian explosion in its initial stage showing the expanding explosion of the pressurized plug. (2 July 09)
After a 36 hrs pause in activity between the evening of 30 June and the morning of 2 July, Anak Krakatau started again with powerful vulcanian explosions. The largest of these explosions were preceded by an inflation and shaking of the active cone or lava dome, triggering rock-slides from its flanks, until the plug gave way in giant explosions ejecting a rapdly expanding mass of red-hot lava, solid rocks, and large amounts of ash, forming plumes of up to 2 km heights. Most of these explosions ejected many blocks into the sea and the forest of Anak Krakatau, and on one location, our boat at around 500m distance from the shore, had to make a quick escape from falling blocks, some of which nevertheless fell beyond the boat, but fortunately did not hit... Strombolian activity at Anak Krakatau on 6 June 2009
Strombolian activity at Anak Krakatau on 6 June 2009
The activity of Anak Krakatau continues with no sign of weakening. As observed during a recent expedition from 4-8 June, strong strombolian activity from the new vent between the old summit vent and the 2007 vent on the S side of the summit cone has filled the collapse crater from 2007 and throws incandescent blocks and bombs to up to 500-700 m above the vent and reaching severl hundreds meters distance. At times, this activity is similar to small lava fountains and at other times, eruptions are more vulcanian-type, rich in ash, producing plumes up to 1 km high. The latter are often accompanied by loud blasts that can be heared many kilometers away and give impressive echoes on the walls of the surrounding caldera. Indivudal explosions are following each other at invervals of 2-5 and rarely more minutes. Photos of this activity can be found here. ...more [read all]

The activity of Anak Krakatau is increasing. Direct observations of the crater in late April revealed strong strombolian activity from a vent inside the crater of the 2007-2008 eruption building up a new scoria cone inside this crater. We are planning to revisit the volcano in the first week of June for more observations. [read all]

According to a news article, explosions and earthquakes from Anak Krakatau averaged 120 per day approximately during 11-17 August. Monitoring personnel observed active lava flows, ejecting rocks, and emissions of "smoke." [read all]

Anak Krakatau continues to produce small ash-rich strombolian explosions. An indirect report from about one week ago about "lava reaching the sea", i.e. lava flows, need to be verified as it cannot be confirmed from other sources so far. More likely, ejected incandescent blocks are occasionally reaching the sea. [read all]

Anak Krakatau is getting active again. CVGHM reported increased seismicity during 14-21 April as well as ash plumes accompanied by ejections of incandescent rocks observed during field observations on 16, 17, and 18 April. The renewed eruption affected the summit and the E and S flanks. Booming noises were reported and occasionally heard at an observation post 42 km away. The Alert Level was raised to 3 (on a scale of 1-4) on 21 April. [read all]

Anak Krakatau continues its new strombolian activity from the new vent south of the summit crater. The eruptions are producing small ash plumes, ejections of incandescent spatter bombs as well as lava flows, as news reports and data from KRAKMON indicate. Seismicity was at elevated levels. [read all]

GAK published a series of photos showing the new activity at Anak Krakatau. A vent located on the S flank of the summit cone formed as pit crater around 23 October; on around 25 October, phreatic (?) and probably phreatomagmatic ash eruptions started from this location, producing clouds of ash 200-300 m high, and occurring at intervals of 3-6 minutes. Krakatoa volcano in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra is showing an increased seismic activity as the Indonesian Volcanological Survey reports. Whether eruptive activity is already taking place, is not known at the moment due to bad obvservation conditions, but it is likely that there is or will be activity in the very near future.

Tangkuban Parahu, a volcano in west Java very near the regional capital Bandung (2 million inhabitants) might be coming back to life very soon. The Volcanological Survey of Indonesia has raised the alert level and reports strongly increased seismicity, and strong emission of sulphuric gasses since today. Access to the volcano is fobidden.
