Suoh volcanoMaar 1000 m (3,281 ft)
Sumatra, Indonesia, -5.25°S / 104.27°E Current status: dormant (1 out of 5) [hide map] [enlarge map]
Typical eruption style:
Strong hydrothermal activity, phreatic eruptions. Suoh volcano eruptions: 1933 (large phreatic eruption at Pematang Bata), 1994 (very small phreatic explosions after earthquake on Feb. 15) Last earthquakes nearby:
Background:Numerous hot springs occur along faults within the depression, which contains the Pematang Bata fumarole field. Large phreatic explosions (0.2 cu km tephra) occurred at the time of a major tectonic earthquake in 1933.Very minor hydrothermal explosions produced two 5-m-wide craters 2 weeks after an earthquake (Magnitude 7.2) on the 15th of February 1994. --- Source: GVP, Smithsonian Institute |
