Background
A hydrophone signal was detected in 1963 from a submarine eruption near the Norfold Island Ridge in the SW Pacific about 450 km SSE of New Caledonia. A ship shortly thereafter observed large amounts of floating pumice from an area consistent with the hydrophone signal source. The Norfolk Island Ridge rises at least 1100 m from a typical basin depth of 3500 m in this area. The location listed here is that of the floating pumice observation. Pumice has been also been observed previously at this location (Kibblewhite, 1966).---
