Many dead birds are found near the black lake at Dallol, a small explosion crater west of the main complex of Dallol, and thought to have been created during the last known eruption in 1926. THe crater lake has a dark surface and is saturated with salt and probably contains many other anorganic and organic substances, as it smells badly hydrocarons. Perhaps these birds are attracted by the water and confused in the heat, taste the toxic solution and then soon after die near the spot. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
