Background
Brown Mountain, SE of Mount McLoughlin, is a forested basaltic-andesite shield volcano with fresh, unvegetated lava flows descending as far as the base of the volcano on three sides. The latest flows are estimated by Williams (1942) to be possibly only a few centuries old, but Smith (in Wood and Kienle 1990) brackets the age of Brown Mountain between 60,000 and 12,000 years.---
