Campi Flegrei volcano (Italy): inflation and weak volcanic unrest continue

Weak volcanic unrest continues with little variation over the past months at the caldera volcano. Ground inflation continues at steady rates of up to 1 cm per month, centered in the Pozzuoli area, and micro-seismic and degassing activity remain elevated.

From the latest report of the volcano observatory in Naples (Osservatorio Vesuviano, OV-INGV) for Jan 2022:
During January 2022, there were 260 small earthquakes in the Campi Flegrei area. 227 events (about 87% of the total) had a magnitude lower than 1.0, 8 events (about 3%) had a magnitude between 1.0 and 1.9, and there was only 1 event of magnitude around 2.5.
In the case of 24 quakes (about 9.2%), it was not possible to determine the magnitude due to the low amplitude of the signal not clearly distinguishable from the background noise. In total, 133 events were located (51% of those recorded) located mainly between Pozzuoli, Astroni, the Solfatara-Pisciarelli-Agnano area and the Gulf of Pozzuoli with depths strongly concentrated in the first 3 km and a maximum depth of about 4.2 km.
The soil deformation monitoring networks confirm a radial geometry of uplift centered in the Pozzuoli area with an average speed of about 10 ± 2 mm / month. The total uplift recorded at the GPS station in Rione Terra (RITE) stands at about 90 cm since November 2005, of which about 56 cm uplift occurred since January 2016.
The thermographic measurements in the monitored areas show substantially stable temperature trends. The geochemical parameters confirm the multi-year heating and pressurization trends of the hydrothermal system. The flow of CO2 from the soil, in the Solfatara area, is confirmed to be around 3000 tons per day, values comparable to those found in the plume of active volcanoes with persistent degassing.

A seismic swarm occurred beneath the Phlegrean Fields. This swarm began at 03:51 on 26/04/2020 and was made up of 34 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 0.0 to 3.1 and hypocentral depth between 1-2 km. There have been no new fumarole openings reported. ... Read all
