PHIVOLCS issued a special notice for Kanlaon on 21 January, noting that a total of 18 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past day. Four of those events were classified as shallow “tornillo” signals indicating gas movement along shallow fractures in the upper part of the volcano. Ground deformation data from continuous GPS and tilt measurements indicated slight inflation of the volcano since mid-October 2021.
The seismic activity and ground deformation was likely caused by shallow hydrothermal processes and could generate phreatic events. The Alert Level remained at 1 (on a scale of 0-5) and PHIVOLCS reminded the public to remain outside of the 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone.

Volcanic activity at Canlaon volcano continues at low levels and has not shown significant variations recently. According to the recent bulletins released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the Canlaon volcano monitoring network has detected eleven (11) volcanic earthquakes during the last 7 days. Moderate emissions of steam-laden plumes were observed to rise 300m before drifting northwest. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions were recorded at 96 tonnes/day last 8 May 2021. The lower and middle slopes of the volcano have been observed to be slightly inflating since June 2020 based on continuous GPS and electronic tilt measurements. This may indicate hydrothermal, tectonic, or deep-seated magmatic processes ongoing underneath the surface. ... Read all

PHIVOLCS reported slightly increased seismic activity and volcanic gas flux at Kanlaon. The seismic network recorded 28 volcanic earthquakes during 11-13 February with local magnitudes between 0.7 and 2.2. They were located at shallow depths around 10 km across the N to E portions of the edifice. ... Read all
