Cerro Negro de Mayasquer volcano news & activity updates:Wed, 7 Aug 2019, 12:05 Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (IGEPN) and the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Pasto del Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC OVSP) jointly reported that the most recent seismic swarm below Cerro Negro de Mayasquer and Chiles volcanoes began in September 2018 and continued at least through 1 August. Read more...The swarm has consisted of 147,000 earthquakes, recorded up to the time of the report publication, mostly with magnitudes less than 3.6. Notably, at least 91 very-long-period earthquakes and 89 long-period earthquakes have been detected, indicative of a magmatic body at depth. In addition, at 07:38 on 25 July 2019, a M4 earthquake was located 4 km below the summit of Chiles and felt by residents. About 850 volcano-tectonic events were recorded during 25-28 July. No other signs of volcanic unrest have been detected. Mon, 19 Jan 2015, 10:58 ![]() Earthquake locations at Chiles volcano during 1-8 Jan 2015 (IGEPN) Seismic activity remains high with an average of almost 1200 small quakes detected on a daily basis under the Chiles volcano. Read more...However, it has been decreasing overall compared to last year and no events were large enough to be felt recently. [ less] Mon, 8 Dec 2014, 09:49 ![]() Histogram of earthquakes at Chiles volcano (IGPEN) Seismic activity continues to be important. In the last week, almost 20,000 earthquakes with a daily average of 2845 were detected. 5 of them were felt by the local population, the largest one was a 3.8 event on 2 Dec at 17:58 local time. Read more...Compared to October and November this year, when daily averages were 3740 and 4579, respectively, seismic activity has declined a lot, but remains high. The epicenters of most quakes are located a few kilometers south-west of the Chiles volcano. ![]() Location of last week's earthquakes (IGPEN) [ less] read allThu, 4 Dec 2014, 19:48 The volcano's alert level was decreased to Yellow. Seismic remains above background, but has decreased significantly recently. Sat, 22 Nov 2014, 10:27 The seismic crisis that began last year continues at high intensity. During the ongoing swarm more than 206,000 earthquakes have been detected in an area 4 km south of the Chiles-Cerro Negro complex since 29 Sep alone. Daily numbers of quakes have ranged between 3700-5400 earthquakes. Read more...While most quakes have been very small, a few were strong enough to be felt by local inhabitants. One possible cause of the earthquake swarm is a magma intrusion at depth, which could be a precursor to new activity of the volcano. This hypothesis is becoming more likely since weak episodes of seismic tremor have started to appear on seismic recordings of stations near the volcano. Tremor are long-lasting regular ground vibrations typical for fluid movements at depth. These could be magma, gasses and/or hydrothermal fluids (water). Which of them is responsible cannot be said at the moment. [ less] read allWed, 22 Oct 2014, 09:24 Orange alert has been declared for the volcanic complex at the Colombia-Ecuador border, after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred under the volcano last Monday. Read more...This earthquake, located at shallow 10 km depth southwest of the Chiles cone, seems to be directly linked to the ongoing crisis at the volcano. The volcano has recently been showing increased signs of volcanic unrest and inflation. This could be the sign of magma rising with the volcano and result in an eruption, although it is not possible to quantify how likely this might be. [ less] read allWed, 23 Jul 2014, 14:37 Seismic unrest continues at the volcanic massif of Chiles and Cerro Negro. However, it decreased during the past week with less than 700 events recorded, compared to 1500-1800 per week during the month before. Read more...Most earthquakes were associated with internal rock fracturing and located at shallow 1-7 km depth in an area 4 km SW of the Chiles dome. Magnitudes reached 2.7 and some quakes were felt. Slight deformation has been detected at the Chiles dome as well. [ less] read allFri, 30 May 2014, 09:42 Unrest at the volcano continues in the form of earthquakes under the Chiles-Cerro Negro volcanic massif. During the past week, the monitoring network recorded around 6500 quakes, mostly located less than 4 km SW from the summit at depths ranging between 1 and 8 km and with magnitudes of up to 4.0 on the Richter scale. Read more...Most of the earthquakes are volcanic-tectonic, i.e. associated with the fracturing of rock due to fluid pressure underground. On May 21, 3 earthquakes at 02:53, 15:44 and 18:46 local time were felt felt by local inhabitants. [ less] read allSat, 10 May 2014, 06:34 ![]() Earthquakes under Cerro Negro de Mayasquer (IGPEN) The seismic crisis under the volcano continues. Thousands of small earthquakes, both volcano-tectonic (due to rock fracturing caused by magma pressure) and long-period (due to fluid movements) earthquakes continue to be registered. Read more...Colombian and Ecuadorian scientists believe it could be related to shallow magma intrusions. At present, no other signs of unrest that could suggest an eruption in a near or medium future have been detected. [ less] Fri, 2 May 2014, 09:38 The alert level of the twin-volcanoes Cerro Negro and Chiles has been raised to yellow in response to an ongoing seismic crisis and deformation that has been detected since November 2013, when a new monitoring network had been installed. Read more...INGEOMINAS reported that seismic activity has remained elevated and that so far, more than 60,000 small earthquakes at shallow depths (1-6 km) have been recorded since November 2013. The epicenters were between 3-5 km SW of the Chiles volcano, while deformation affects neighboring Cerro Negro volcano to the west. Several of them were felt by people living close by. The largest quake so far was a magnitude 4.5 event that was felt widely. Colombian volcanologists mapped the risk zones for each of the two volcanoes. Neither of them has recorded historical eruptions and little is known about their activity. Whether or not the current unrest leads to an eruption in a near or medium-term future (months, years), and if so, which of the two volcanoes would be involved is unknown. [ less] read allThu, 13 Mar 2014, 17:46 ![]() Map of seismicity near Cerro Negro volcano (Image: INGEOMINAS / Pasto Observatory) More than 11,000 micro-earthquakes at shallow depths were recorded beneath the volcanoes of Cerro Negro de Mayasquer and Chiles during the past few months, INGEOMINAS Pasto volcano observatory reported. Read more...The seismic record for Cerro Negro volcano goes only back to past November when a small network of seismometers and tiltmeters was installed, so it is not known whether the observed seismic activity is abnormal or part of the normal behavior of the volcano, which last might have erupted in 1936 and has only fumarolic activity at present. In absence of stronger signs of unrest, the alert level of Cerro Negro remains at green for the moment. The report mentions that a decrease in earthquakes was observed in the first months, while the numbers increased again this March. All quakes were tiny, not exceeding magnitude 1.2. Their hypocenters are located in a cluster a few km SE of Cerro Negro de Mayasquer and mostly between 3 and 5 km depth beneath the summit. [ less] read all
