Background

Located about 11 km E of the Laguna Aramuaca maar, Cerro Yayantique is the most prominent and least-eroded feature in a broad area of Pleistocene volcanic rocks in the SE corner of El Salvador west of the NW arm of the Gulf of Fonseca. Mapped as Pliocene by Weber and Wiesemann (1978).
