Chaitén volcano (Chile): alert level raised, seismic unrest

The alert level of the volcano was raised to "yellow", after an increase in seismic activity was detected.
Chaitén had a famous catastrophic plinian eruption in 2008, which followed centuries of quiescence and ended in the construction of a new lava dome.

The lava dome of the volcano has become more active recently. Incandescent spots are visible at night and a thermal anomaly is visible on satellite data. This suggests that new magma might be rising into the volcano. No explosive activity has (at least so far) occurred. ... read all

On 24 February it was reported that a partial dome collapse of Chaitén's Domo Nuevo 1 lava-dome complex a large amount of material accumulated in the basal ring depression surrounding the dome complex and throughout the Blanco River valley.
