Nevados de Chillán volcano (Chile): new ash emissions

Wednesday Mar 08, 2017 12:05 PM | BY: T

Ash emission at Nevados de Chillán on 7 March 2017
Ash emission at Nevados de Chillán on 7 March 2017
A series of new, moderately sized ash emissions occurred from the volcano yesterday (7 Mar 2017), showing that it remains in a restless state.
The last bulletin of SERNAGEOMIN mentions that there are no significant changes in seismic activity, which remains above background and is dominated by signals reflecting internal fluid movements (gasses, water, magma); 84% of the seismicity recorded between 16 and 28 February were so-called Long-Period events.
The other seismic signals included volcano-tectonic quakes (pressurization causing rock fracturing), weak volcanic tremor pulses and so-called "tornillos" (6.8%), thought to reflect resonance phenomena of the volcanic conduits caused by fluid circulation.
There are no indications that magma is rising to the surface. A small body of fresh magma is believed to have intruded at shallow depth and is interacting with the hydrothermal system (circulating fluids), causing the observed intermittent phreatic explosions when small amounts of overheated fluids escape the system, then flash into steam and pulverize the rocks around them.
