Chirinkotan volcano (Kurile Islands): new explosion, plume to 6000 m altitude

Thursday Mar 02, 2017 12:05 PM | BY: T

Another explosion occurred at the volcano yesterday (1 March 2017) at around 09:16 UTC. An ash plume was spotted that reached about 6000 m altitude and drifted east before dissipating.
What type of activity exactly is occurring at the remote volcano is unknown - there is no monitoring from ground and the typically bad weather with dense cloud cover allows only rarely to retrieve cloud-free satellite images.
From what is available, there are no indications of intense heat sources at the volcano currently. This suggests that there is no lava flow or active dome and that the sporadic (about 3 or 4 since November 2016), but often powerful explosions could be phreatic or hydrothermal in nature.
