Copahue volcano (Chile/Argentina border) activity update: seismic swarms, strong degassing, occasional glow from crater
Tuesday Jan 08, 2013 11:05 AM | BY: TOMPFEIFFER
SERNAGEOMIN reported 3 seismic swarms and volcanic tremor on 6 Jan, accompanied by increased crater glow and elevated degassing.
Sunday, Jan 06, 2013
Chilean scientist think that new eruptions from the volcano could occur any time. SERNAGEOMIN's latest bulletin informs that the seismicity under Copahue has shown a significant change since 31 December. A number of quakes both related to fracturing of rocks and fluid movements appeared at shallow depths of 4 km and have been becoming shallower. Also, a change in the plume towards becoming denser and grayer, i.e. more ash-rich, has been noted in recent days. For this reason, the alert level was raised back to orange.
Thursday, Jan 03, 2013
A steam and gas plume rises from the volcano, but no further explosions were recorded. SERNAGEOMIN keeps the alert level at yellow.
Wednesday, Jan 02, 2013
A steam and ash plume is rising a few 100 m and sometimes can seen on satellite images as well, but no recent explosions were reported.
Sunday, Dec 30, 2012
Visual and seismic activity have decreased at Copahue and no more ash emissions or incandescence have been observed since 29 Dec. It is thought that the small eruption that had started on 22 Dec has ended. It has emplaced a small body of lava (a lava dome) inside the crater which is now cooling, but still visible as a thermal anomaly on MODIS satellite data. ...
Friday, Dec 28, 2012
New ash emissions occurred today. Ash clouds at 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude extending about 50 km NE along with strong SO2 emissions visible on satellite data.

Volcanic crisis at Sakurajima - updates
: A strong earthquake swarm and increased inflation were detected in August 2015 and triggered authorities to raise the alert level, as volcanologists think that a larger eruption could follow. News and updates on the events can be found on this page.
1-3 day excursions
: If you're interested in volcanoes, there are a number of excursions you should not miss if you're in the area: hike to the craters of Stromboli volcano, climb Etna volcano, get to know the unique volcanic history of Santorini - some examples of shorter (1-3 days) tours and excursions we offer.
Desert, Salt & Volcanoes
