Copahue volcano (Chile / Argentina border) activity update: degassing, weak glow, seismic swarm
Thursday Jan 10, 2013 11:05 AM | BY: T
The volcano produces a dense column of steam and gas rising up to about 1 km. During nighttime there is slight glow visible. More than 1200 earthquakes were recorded during 10 Jan.

SERNAGEOMIN reports a strong increase in seismicity during 8 Dec, when more than 1100 events were recorded with little change in surface activity (so far!).
Tuesday, Jan 08, 2013
SERNAGEOMIN reported 3 seismic swarms and volcanic tremor on 6 Jan, accompanied by increased crater glow and elevated degassing.
Sunday, Jan 06, 2013
Chilean scientist think that new eruptions from the volcano could occur any time. SERNAGEOMIN's latest bulletin informs that the seismicity under Copahue has shown a significant change since 31 December. A number of quakes both related to fracturing of rocks and fluid movements appeared at shallow depths of 4 km and have been becoming shallower. Also, a change in the plume towards becoming denser and grayer, i.e. more ash-rich, has been noted in recent days. For this reason, the alert level was raised back to orange.
Thursday, Jan 03, 2013
A steam and gas plume rises from the volcano, but no further explosions were recorded. SERNAGEOMIN keeps the alert level at yellow.
Wednesday, Jan 02, 2013
A steam and ash plume is rising a few 100 m and sometimes can seen on satellite images as well, but no recent explosions were reported.

Our new tour, guided by a photographer and volcanologist, will lead to five islands: Sao Miguel, Faial, Terceira, Pico and Flores - each with its distinct character to discover.
Volcanoes in the Solar System
: The Earth is not the only place with volcanic activity. Active volcanism also occurs at at least 3 other bodies in our Solar System.
