Dalaffilla volcano (Erta Ale range, Ethiopia): eruption news & activity reports
Fri, 21 Nov 2008, 20:33
The eruption near Dalaffilla and Alu volcanoes on 3 November were reported by night-time satellite images. There was a multi-lobed lava-fieldwith a channel flowing to north-east. The source was a fissure northwest of Dalaffilla. The lava flowded area has a dimension of aproximately 9,3 x 15 km. Thermal anomalies showed that the lava-flow was also active during 12-16 November.

As more news come in, the eruption in the Erta Ale range can now almost certainly be attributed to a fissure between Dalaffilla and Alu volcanoes. It could be one of the largest volcanic eruptions known in historic times in Africa. News reports interpreting satellite data suggest that there were enormous lava flows in the early stages of the eruption. ...moreAn abnormal heat source covering an area of more than 300 square kilometers, possibly due to extremely wide-spread lava flows, was detected by MODIS. Not much more details about the eruption and its effects on the very scarsely populated Afar area are available at present. [ less] [ read all]

Sulphur dioxide plume from the new eruption in the Afar on Nov 6, showing that the plume has reached and crossed India (source: NESDIS)
As Simon Carn from MTU alerted via a list message, a new eruption from a vent at the northern end of the Erta Ale volcanic range in the Danakil, Ethiopia, has been detected by satellite instruments on November 3. ...moreThe eruption first manifested itself as a large sulfur dioxide (SO2) cloud drifting eastwards over the Arabian peninsula, detected by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS). MODIS data from the University of Hawaii's MODVOLC hot-spot monitoring tool (http://modis.higp.hawaii.edu) confirmed an extensive hot-spot (presumably lava flows) near Alu volcano, in the northern part of the Erta 'Ale range. Details are still sketchy and these observations are as yet unconfirmed from the ground.
Map of the Danakil with the Erta Ale range showing the hot area on 4 Nov, presumably lava flows, visible on MODVOLC's hot-spot monitoring tool.

Latest quakes in Greece: Greece has a lot of earthquake activity, but most of them occur around the margin of the Aegean microplate. The Cycladic islands are located in its center and therefore seismically comparably quiet.
Pearl of the Aegean: Santorini is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Discover its fascinating natural and cultural history on a relaxed walking study tour with us.
