Etna volcano (Italy), activity update: strombolian activity from the new fissure at 2800 m E of SE crater

Montag Mai 26, 2008 15:54 |

Strombolian explosion from a vent at 2800m a.s.l. on the May 13 eruptive fissure (Etna volcano)
Strombolian explosion from a vent at 2800m a.s.l. on the May 13 eruptive fissure (Etna volcano)
The eruption at Etna that had started spectacularly on May 13, is still continuing, although lava emission had drastically decreased shortly after the onset of the eruption.
Some field observations made by our team during May 23 and 24: one of the several vents aligned on the impressive fissure below the E side of SE crater was still spattering and erupting small strombolian fountains at irregular intervals of 30-60 minutes. Another two vents just above it were emitting ash, dark fragments and occasionally glowing bombs at less infrquent intervals. The active vent at times shows powerful explosions throwing bombs to several hundred meters height. One of these was witnessed at (too) close range on May 25 in the evening, but it was possible to shelter from falling blocks under a huge block thrown out at the opening of the fissure. The lava flow continues weakly, with a barely incandescent front of tumbling, glowing blocks at the active front on the steep wall of the Valle del Bove.
As of today, the eruption seems to be going on, but judging from afara, the emission rate seems to have further decreased.

Although further decreasing, ash and lava emissions are still continuing from the new fissure vents at the E base of SE cone. [mehr]

Montag, Mai 19, 2008
Lava and ash emissions continue although at very low levels. The violent fissure eruption that started on May 13 from an originally 600 m long east-trending fissure parting from the NE base of the SE crater at around 2900 m elevation decreased surprisingly quickly in intensity. It seems to be coming to a soon end, although a weak emission of lava continues at present. ... [mehr]

From field observations by Rosario, the beginning of a large new eruption at Etna is confirmed. Following the intense tremor, a fissure has opened NE of the SE crater, about 800m long, and erupting from about 15 vents with spectacular bubbles and hawaiian lava fountains. The lava is very fluid and forms impressive flows into the Valle del Bove. ... [mehr]
Donnerstag, Apr 24, 2008
As observed during our recent tour to Etna and the Eolian Islands, mild strombolian activity, with small exploisions every 10-20 minutes, is present at the vent located at the lower E flank of the SE crater of Etna. [mehr]
